SPRING HILL, Fla. — The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting in Spring Hill.

Deputies received a call a little before 3 p.m. on Tuesday stating that there was an individual at a local convenience store acting strange and waving a firearm around. Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis says that the individual left the store and that deputies were in the area looking for the individual.

Eventually, deputies were able to locate and confront the individual, identified as Gary Jean Schryver.

Sheriff Nienhuis says that the individual did not comply with deputies' commands and the deputy involved felt that his life was threatened and shot the individual.  The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave as per standard protocol.

Schryver has been transported to a local trauma center. Deputies say he was alert and talking when he left the scene.

Sheriff Nienhuis says that his initial indication is that the individual may have been attempting to execute suicide-by-cop.

Roads were closed between the area of Marble Avenue and Antelope Street in Spring Hill. Deputies say that there is increased police activity in the area.
