A 34-year-old inmate had to be pepper sprayed after allegedly assaulting two guards.

George Carter, of Lecanto, is now facing battery charges.

According to Citrus County deputies, at 7 a.m. on Sunday, two guards were conducting a cell search at the Citrus County Detention Center when Carter attacked.

Deputies say Carter threw a six inch plastic coffee mug at one officer, hitting him in the leg.

When a second officer came to assist, Carter allegedly shoved that officer which resulted in the officer falling to the ground.

Deputies say Carter had to be pepper sprayed in order to be subdued.

An arrest affidavit shows surveillance video captured a struggle at the cell and the second officer being shoved and subsequently falling down.

Deputies say Carter declined to answer any questions.
