CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. — A highly contagious upper respiratory infection has caused the Citrus County Animal Shelter to temporarily close.

Citrus County Animal Services said the shelter has implemented strict isolation protocols while they wait for lab results to determine the type of infection the animals have.

At this time, the shelter veterinarian is working with veterinarians from the University of Florida Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program to ensure all the animals at the shelter, approximately 44, are receiving medical supportive care.

"If you have visited the shelter or reclaimed or adopted an animal from the shelter in the past two weeks, it is highly encouraged that you contact your veterinarian immediately." — Citrus County Animal Services

The shelter said they are closed until further notice and will provide updates.
