WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A Purdue University professor and his wife have pleaded guilty to using more than $1 million in federal research funds for their personal expenses.

Qingyou Han, 61, serves as the director for Purdue's Center for Materials Processing Research.

Federal prosecutors say Han admitted to using $1.3 million from the National Science Foundation funds.

The money was funneled into his wife, Lu Shao's, company, Hans Tech LLC. Both have pleaded guilty to a federal wire fraud charge.

A Purdue spokesperson says they are aware of the plea and says it will "carefully consider the matter in light of its policies."
