WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina woman is charged with murder and child abuse after authorities say she left her baby in a car while she was at work.

News outlets report the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office says 23-year-old Kayla Rochelle Rodgers of Winston-Salem went to work on Thursday and left her 9-month-old son in her car. Investigators said the child was left unattended in the car for several hours.

The sheriff’s office said Rodgers took the child’s lifeless body to a hospital, where doctors performed CPR before the baby was pronounced dead at around 4:45 p.m.

Investigators said Rodgers told law enforcement that when she went to her son’s new babysitter, she found him face down in the crib.

Rodgers is jailed without bail. It’s not known if she has an attorney.
