Kim Cattrall is best known for playing Samantha Jones, the feisty public relations maven on “Sex and the City.”

Cattrall’s character wasn’t kid-friendly, but the actress’ real-life comments about motherhood are raising some eyebrows.

In an interview with BBC Radio about life after 50, Cattrall argues that she is a mother even though she doesn’t have any children.

“I am a parent,” the 59-year-old said. “I have young actors and actresses that I mentor. I have nieces and nephews that I am very close to.”

Cattrall said it wasn’t her first choice to not have children, but when her life went in a different direction, she began to care for the young people closest to her.

“There is a way to become a mother at this day in age that doesn't include your name on the child's birth certificate … You can express that maternal side of you very clearly, very strongly,” she said.

She added that she finds it offensive when she’s described as “childless.”

“It sounds like you're less because you haven't had a child,” she said. “There are many different ways to be a mom in the world.”

While many online support Cattrall’s message, some say describing herself as a mother is taking things too far.

Wrote one poster: “You may play a wonderful role as a mentor, friend and older confidante … but you are not a mom.”
