MIAMI — A Florida teen who saved a 9-year-old boy and his mother from drowning has died after being hospitalized in a coma.

Cristian Burgos, 17, died Wednesday morning according to a GoFundMe created by his family.

According to WPLG, Burgos was a senior and soccer player at Booker T. Washington Senior High School in Miami. The child Burgos saved told WPLG that they were swept out while swimming off the beach at Virginia Key on Monday.

After they got caught in the undercurrent, Burgos jumped in to help, saving the family before he was swept out by strong rip currents himself.

He had to be rescued from the water and was rushed to the hospital. He was in a coma before he died on Wednesday.

The family launched a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses.

"Thank you all who have been donating to help his mother, from the bottom of our hearts," the family wrote on the GoFundMe page. "We ask you to keep us the family, specially his mother in your prayers. God bless you all."

The family will be sharing more about a memorial for Burgos in the coming days.
