Last week, Twitter user Carter Wilkerson asked Wendy's how many retweets it would take for him to get free chicken nuggets for one year. When Wendy's suggested he needed 18 million retweets, clearly he had his work cut out for him.

Although he is still 15 million retweets shy of getting free chicken nuggets from Wendy's, he is closing in on a Twitter record for retweets.

As of Thursday afternoon, Wilkerson's tweet had 2.8 million retweets. By comparison, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres' picture from the 2014 Academy Awards has 3.3 million retweets.

With Wilkerson's tweet closing in on DeGeneres' Academy Award tweet, DeGeneres has turned the moment into a friendly battle.

"Anyone who retweets Carter's tweet should retweet mine; that way I retain my title," DeGeneres said during her show on Thursday. "If I can ride your coat tails to 18 million retweets I'll give you a year's supply of Ellen underwear and this 55-inch Roku TV."

But Wendy's is confident that Wilkerson's tweet will surpass DeGeneres' post. Wendy's said it will donate $100,000 to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption "when" Wilkerson's tweet passes DeGeneres'.
