Both networks have had users experience problems with photos loading, messaging and more.
The website down detector had more than 7,000 reports at one point of problems with Facebook, and more than 12,000 were reported regarding Instagram.
Reports have come in from California, to Florida, to Europe and beyond.
"We're aware that some people and businesses are currently having trouble uploading or sending images, videos and other files on our apps. We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible," a Facebook spokesperson told CNN Business, on behalf of its other apps Instagram and WhatsApp.
Issues have also been reported with the messaging service WhatsApp.
