TAMPA, Fla. -- A wrong-way driver on the Courtney Campbell Causeway caused a multi-vehicle collision, sending two people to area hospitals Friday night, one with critical injuries, authorities said.

Tampa Police arrested 26-year-old Collin John Cole on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with damage and two counts of DUI with serious bodily injury

The incident began when a Ford F150 headed west on the Courtney Campbell struck the rear of a Hyundai Santa Fe just east of Ben T. Davis Beach, the Tampa Police Department said.

Instead of stopping, the Ford pickup sped away going west in the eastbound lanes of the causeway. The pickup truck struck the front of a Ford Mustang then collided head-on with a Honda Pilot.

Upon impact the pickup careened head-on into a Honda Accord.

One crash victim was last listed in critical condition at an area hospital, and another was in serious condition. Their names have not been released.

The Courtney Campbell Causeway was shut down for hours but reopened before daybreak.
