A woman accused of attempting to go the wrong way on the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway has been charged with driving under the influence, officials said.
Dezelle P. Bennett, 26, of Tampa was charged with two counts of driving under the influence with property damage. She was being held in lieu of $1,000 bond at the Hillsborough County Jail Saturday morning.
The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Friday.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2015 Chrysler 200 driven by Bennett was traveling west on U.S. 41 when the car tried to enter the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway eastbound by heading up the eastbound exit ramp.
To avoid on-coming traffic on the exit ramp, the Chrysler went on the outside shoulder of the road, traveled across a curbed grass median and collided with a guardrail and a road construction equipment.
Bennett was taken to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers later arrested Bennett Bennett for DUI.
She refused a breath test at the Hillsborough County Jail, authorities said.
