A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy avoided a collision with a wrong way driver on Thursday morning.
At about 12:53 a.m., a deputy was driving eastbound on Waters Avenue West when he noticed a vehicle travel westbound toward him in the same lane.
The deputy turned on his emergency lights and avoided the car. After he initiated a traffic stop, he noticed the driver, Christy Walters, of St. Petersburg, Fla., showed signs of impairment.
Walters had a BAC of 0.221 and 0.224, according to a media release. She was arrested for DUI and transported to Orient Road Jail where she remained in jail Thursday morning.
Walters is the third wrong way driver reported this week in the Tampa Bay area.
On Tuesday night, Louise Valentine was driving the wrong way in Dade City when she crashed into a Temple Terrace police officer. The officer was treated and released. As of Thursday, Valentine was in Bayonet Point in serious condition. FHP reported that alcohol was not involved in this incident.
On Sunday morning, a wrong way driver nearly hit a Tampa Police officer on I-275 near Fowler Avenue. The driver, Aja Cancela, was pulled over and arrested for DUI. She bonded out that day.
