Throngs of people are on the run for the Tampa Police Department Saturday.

The police force is hosting its 23rd Annual Tampa Police Memorial 5K/1-Mile Run-Walk in downtown Tampa.

The event kicked off at 8 a.m. Saturday at Lykes Gaslight Park, 411 N. Franklin St.

Thirty-one officers will be running in the memory of one of the 31 fallen officers.

The group of officers will be wearing a memorial armband imprinted with each fallen Tampa police officer's name and black T-shirts.

The police department's 5K and mile run/walk is staged in honor of the agency's fallen officers and charity and scholarship efforts.

During the run and walk several downtown streets and a part of Bayshore Boulevard will be closed.

Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes.
