Passenger in wrong way vehicle dies in head-on crash in Citrus County

A passenger in a vehicle headed in the wrong direction on West Gulf to Lake Highway died in a head-on collision with a second vehicle early Sunday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Pamela Jean Allen, 56, of Homosassa was a passenger in a 2007 Pontiac Vibe traveling eastbound in a westbound lane on West Gulf to Lake Highway near South Thayer Avenue shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday, a Florida Highway Patrol news release said.

The Pontiac collided head on with a westbound 2004 Toyota Camry.

Cheryl Lynn Reese, 59, of Auburndale, the driver of the Pontiac, suffered serious injuries and taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.

Kaitlin Jean Carroll-Cruz, 23, of Beverly Hills, who was driving the Camry, also sustained serious injuries and taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center.

Charges are pending.
