A motorist traveling at a high rate of speed was ejected from his car after it struck a guardrail on Gandy Boulevard Saturday night, St. Petersburg police said. He died later at an area hospital.
Maurice La'Trail Wheeler, 27, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo westbound on Gandy Blvd. approaching the Interstate 275 overpass about 10:40 p.m. Saturday, St. Petersburg police spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez said in a statement.
The Monte Carlo came upon a slower moving westbound vehicle. The car swerved to the right, went out of control and struck a guardrail.
Wheeler was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the Monte Carlo, the release said.
Paramedics took Wheeler to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg hospital, where he died hours later.
