On the morning of July 7, 2016, a deputy was assigned to work in the Disciplinary Pod of the Manatee County jail.

The deputy, along with a nurse at the jail, walked up to an inmate's cell to pass his medication to him. When the deputy opened the food hatch to the cell, the inmate, Lens Toussaint, threw a cup of liquid at the deputy. The liquid reportedly went into both of the deputy's eyes, up his nose and down his throat. The deputy identified the liquid as urine by the smell and the fact that the inmate said, "How do you like the taste of me d...?"

There is surveillance video of the incident which shows the deputy opening the hatch, reacting as though something struck him and putting his hands up to his face and backing away.

The nurse was standing just a few feet away from the deputy and witnessed the incident. She said urine struck her pant leg.

According to the Manatee County jail website, Toussaint was in jail for a 2014 arrest of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. He remains in jail and is now charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.
