A 66-year-old man died in a fiery, head-on collision on U.S. 301 at Dead River Road in Thonotosassa Wednesday morning, officials said.

The traffic incident occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 1999 Chrysler van driven by Robert Staehle, 66, of Tampa, was traveling north on U.S. 301 when it crossed into the southbound lane.

The Chrysler collided head-on into a 1983 semi-tractor trailer driven by Diomithis Koukos, 61, of Spring Hill.

On impact the Chrysler caught fire and burned. The semi traveled into a wooded area off the west shoulder of the road.

Staehle died on the scene, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
