Driver dies after car plows into rear of tanker

Posted

A 2005 Chevy Cobalt plowed into the rear of a gasoline tanker truck on U.S. 19 at Alderman Road in Palm Harbor early Saturday morning, claiming the life of the Cobalt driver, authorities said.

A 2006 Freight semi-tractor trailer driven by Norman Melendez Gonzalez, 37, of Tampa, was headed north on U.S. 19 south of Alderman Road about 5:49 a.m.

The Cobalt, traveling in the same lane behind the tanker, failed to stop and collided into the rear of the semi's trailer.

The 31-year-old Cobalt driver, whose name was not released pending notification of next of kin, was taken to Florida Hospital North Pinellas, where he died of his injuries, Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Steve Gaskins said in a news release.

Gonzalez was not injured.
