Clearwater police are investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 27-year-old man overnight.

Markeen Prim of Clearwater was standing in a gathering at the intersection of Howard Street and Tioga Avenue shortly before midnight Saturday when shots rang out, police spokesman Rob Shaw said in a news release.

Prim was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Before the shooting a group of people had gathered near the intersection of Howard and Tioga in remembrance of a person who died in an ATV accident a few years ago, the release states.

Kavona Lee is Prim's sister.  She said she was enjoying the gathering when she heard the shots.  Lee said she tried to give him medical attention.

"Somebody out there knows something, you need to say something," said Lee.

Police homicide detectives remain on the scene early Sunday morning.  Investigators said dozens of people scattered as officers arrived to the scene.

"We need people to come forward and tell us what they heard," said Shaw.

Prim is a father of four girls.
