Clearwater police have made an arrest in an incident at a convenience store on South Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, where a man was fatally shot 17 times, authorities said.

Anthony James Roy, 50, was taken into custody and charged with first degree murder early Sunday morning, Clearwater police spokesman Rob Shaw said in a news release. He is being held at the Pinellas County Jail.

Roy has been accused of shooting 31-year-old Bernard Antonio Richards 17 times Saturday night after they got into an argument at the Stop-N-Shop convenience store at 1495 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. in Clearwater, the release states.

Roy also kicked the Richards as he lay dying on the sidewalk, Shaw said in the release.

According to police officials, Roy and Richards were acquaintances.
