MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation is bumping up the schedule for road improvements on State Road 64 in Manatee County.

The state and county will be installing a roundabout at State Road 64 and Greyhawk Blvd/Pope Road. It was originally scheduled for 2023 and is now slated for construction to begin in the spring of 2020.

Two teens died in a crash at this intersection in September of 2018. Troopers say Chase Coyner made a left turn on Pope Road and didn't see a truck traveling in the opposite direction. Coyner and his passenger, Matthew Powers, both died.

Since that crash, the boys fathers have been fighting for change. Transportation officials shut down the left turn lane on State Road 64 after the accident.

FDOT will be holding a public hearing on Tuesday, March 26 at the Bayside Community Church, 15800 SR 64 in Bradenton.

It will be an open house at 5 p.m. where staff will discuss the project and answer questions. A formal presentation will follow at 6 p.m.
