PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Earlier this week, we received a picture from a viewer concerned about the looks of a portion of the Gateway Bridge project.

The "pier" is at the intersection of Bryan Dairy Road and U.S. 19.

We immediately reached out to the Florida Department of Transportation who assure us that the pier is not falling apart.

FDOT tells us there was form work done recently for the concrete placement and when it was removed the inspectors saw some inconsistencies in the surface.

Inspectors have requested the contractor remove the concrete in the area to verify the condition.

FDOT officials say in the photo you can see the contractor removing the concrete so they can perform a more thorough analysis. Right now, they're trying to investigate if there's an issue with the column.

We'll reach back out to FDOT to determine the results of the analysis in the next few weeks.
