Tech's misdiagnosis nearly costs elderly couple $7,000 in AC unit repair

Second opinion spared couple's savings
Posted

The AC shut off leaving Larry and Marilyn Simon to suffer. The Simons called the company that installed their unit 2 years ago.

The tech concluded the duct work needed replacing. But the contractor who came out and gave them a second opinion said the duct work is in fine working order. The Simons called on Jon Steinmetz owner of Johnny Cool for a second opinion.

Steinmetz found the duct work to be in great condition. But the first tech left a written estimate quoting a $7000 duct replacement job.

The culprit turned out to be a clogged drain line. Typically about a $115 service call. It took Steinmetz 10 minutes to get the unit up and running.

The couple's son, Elliot Simon complained to the company about the initial diagnosis and the $271 service call charge.

The business made it right.

The owner tells us he fired the technician and he refunded the Simon's $271. Something that never would have happened had this couple not called for a second opinion.
