It might be the holiday season and your mindset might be on gifts, but it should also be on your child's college education. It's never too early to start planning for college and taking the steps to make sure you and your child save as much as possible.

FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It's a questionnaire that colleges use to determine how much financial aid to award students.

Families can start submitting now and many experts say you should get this done by January. That's well ahead of the March 2nd deadline.

Something else to help you plan for the future, college savings plans.

MyFloridaPrepaid.com offers prepaid plans that allow you to lock in this year's tuition for whenever your child is ready to go to college.

The site also has savings plans that allow you to contribute what you can when you can.
