Furniture giant IKEA announced Thursday that it will no longer sell pull-cord window blinds.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of one child dies every month from strangulation due to blind cords.
Target stopped selling pull-cord blinds last spring.
Ikea's decision to stop selling the blinds is effective immediately in the U.S.
Currently, there isn't a mandatory safety standard for window coverings.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is considering adding one.The proposal would prohibit cords on blinds or that a guard be used when there's no alternative to a cord.
The guard is a small device that makes it so the cord can't form a loop.
