The FDA has asked Miami-Dade and Broward counties to immediately stop collecting blood out of fear of spreading the Zika virus.

The state is investigating multiple non-travel-related Zika virus cases in Miami-Dade and Broward that could be the first time Zika has spread by mosquito in the United States.

The Food and Drug Administration wants blood collection to stop until safeguards can be put in place, such as screening each unit of blood collected for Zika.

The FDA recommends surrounding counties put the same precautions in place.
