A woman is in critical condition after fire officials pulled her, unconscious, from an apartment fire in St. Petersburg early Thursday morning.

Around 1:30 a.m., St. Petersburg Fire Rescue responded to the 2000 block of Gandy Boulevard North in St. Pete in response to a structure fire. When fire crews arrived on scene they saw smoke coming from unit 74.

Firefighters had to force entry into the apartment where they found a small fire in the living room.

A woman was found unconscious inside her bedroom in the unit at the time of the fire. Fire officials believe she was overcome by the smoke inside the apartment.

St. Pete Fire Rescue believe that the woman was the only person in inside the unit at the time of the fire. Fire crews got the woman out of the apartment to safety and she was trauma alerted to Tampa General hospital, where she is being treated and is currently in critical condition.

The woman has not been identified at this time.

Fire officials say that the woman had one cat which did not survive the fire.

The cause of the fire still under investigation.
