A mother and father were arrested on Wednesday night following an investigation into child abuse allegations.

During the investigation, police determined that the 6-week-old victim suffered severe head injuries and other physical injuries consistent with physical abuse. Detectives determined that the newborn's mother, 24-year-old Rosa Elena Toledo, was the one caring for the newborn at the time he was injured. Police determined that the abuse took place over the Labor Day Holiday weekend.

During the investigation, detectives learned that after the newborn was injured, Toledo and the baby's father, 26-year-old Gabriel Patrick Allen-Rosa, left for New Jersey during Hurricane Irma, and failed to seek medical attention for the 6-week-old child knowing that the child was displaying signs of injury.

Once the couple arrived back to their home in Florida, they both failed to again seek immediate medical attention for the newborn, despite having multiple family members express their concern for the newborn's overall health and well-being.

It was only after the threat by family members to call authorities did the parents take the newborn to a hospital in Tampa for treatment, police say.

Toledo was charged with Aggravated Child Abuse and Aggravated Child Neglect. Allen-Rosa was charged with Aggravated Child Neglect.

The couple shares a second older child in common who is currently being cared for by family members.
