Monday night featured the first presidential debate for the 2016 general election. 

So how did the candidates do?

DecodeDC's Dick Meyers wrote that the debate was less of a spectacle than it could have been and lacked knockout punches or lethal gaffes. 

The Washington Post reported that Clinton put Trump on the defensive. Washington Post analyst Chris Cillizza wrote that Clinton won the debate

The New York Times reported the two candidates painted very different portraits of America. Here is a look at the Times' fact check of the debate. 

Politico listed five key takeaways from the debates and reported that insiders thought Clinton won. ABC News, meanwhile, reported that Trump more than countered Clinton's jabs. 

Fox News reported Trump's camp was unhappy with questions from moderator Lester Holt. Fox News called the debate "fiery."

CBS News fact checked the debate. NBC News wrote that Clinton's studying for the debate paid off.
