A suspected drag racer caused a horrible crash in Port Richey this past weekend. According to police, the driver of a blue Infiniti G35 crossed a median and crashed into a vehicle carrying an elderly couple. Police said the driver of the Infiniti was trying to race another vehicle.

Port Richey Police said the 32-year-old driver of the Infiniti severely injured himself and Berry and Judy Alexander after drag racing on US Highway 19 in Port Richey.

The crash happened on Saturday, Oct. 28th around 9:30 p.m. At least five people witnessed the crash near Ridge Road.

"I remember seeing smoke coming up. I assumed that's why the husband got out and got his wife because there was smoke," said witness Jerrica Owens.

Other witnesses said the driver of the Infiniti was revving the engine and accelerating before the accident. There were 3 passengers in the Infiniti. The driver was rushed to a hospital and was sedated for internal bleeding.

Neighbors of the elderly couple say they are still in the hospital.

"They're great people and it's just terrible something like that would happen to them when they're usually so cautious and everything," said Bill Schubert, a neighbor.

Police are conducting a criminal investigation regarding whether or not the driver of the Infiniti was under the influence.

Police said they found baggies, two syringes, and a spoon with burnt marks on the bottom in the driver's vehicle.
