TAMPA, Fla. — USF senior Veronica Soler-Torres is making Super Bowl week a much safer place.
"Being able to do my part and serve my community in helping mitigate Covid-19 is exciting," says Soler-Torres.
Veronica is the deputy director of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) at USF's College of Public Health.
This week her team, which has been specially trained in preparedness, is working several Super Bowl events, including the Experience fan zone at downtown Tampa's Curtis Hixon Park.
"Each day, the event's staff and vendors and VIP go through us," says Soler-Torres.
Her USF CERT team conducts temperature checks, health screening questions and more.
CERT is made up of civilian and student volunteers, all of whom fearlessly thrust themselves into intense situations.
"We've helped with COVID testing, vaccination sites," says USF instructor Elizabeth Dunn, CERT leader and an expert in Global Disaster Management. "During Hurricane Irma we actually deployed 200 members."
CERT teams are open to volunteers across the nation. The USF team has students from myriad majors, including medical, engineering and finance.
