Jeremy Hellickson will be out six to eight weeks after elbow surgery

Rays right-hander felt pain while throwing in Iowa

Rays right-hander Jeremy Hellickson will be lost to the Tampa Bay Rays until mid to late May after undergoing elbow surgery last week in St. Petersburg.

Hellickson said he felt stiffness in his elbow while throwing in Iowa in December.  He flew down to St. Pete to have tests done.

Surgery was performed to remove loose bodies from his elbow last Wednesday after his arm "locked up" in a second bullpen session in mid-January..

With Hellickson sidelined for the first 6 to 8 weeks of the season a fifth spot in the rotation has to be filled.

The Rays will likely turn to Jake Odorizzi to fill that spot in Hellickson's absence.
