Before county music superstar Blake Shelton proposed to his longtime girlfriend Gwen Stefani, he knew he needed to sit down and have an important discussion. Sometimes, a man will sit down with his intended’s father to ask for her hand in marriage. But Shelton had to have a heart-to-heart with three men in Stefani’s life before getting down on one knee: her sons.
“Blake told her boys that he wanted to propose and asked their permission,” a source close to Stefani told People. “Her family very much approves of him. He’s an amazing partner and a great extra dad to the boys. Gwen is ecstatic. The proposal was a surprise.”
Stefani’s three sons — Kingston, age 14; Zuma, 12; and Apollo, 6 — are from the singer’s first marriage, to Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, whom she divorced after 13 years of marriage.
But, Shelton is taking his future stepdad role seriously, it seems. So he wanted to get the boys’ approval before he asked their mom the big question.
Fortunately, they gave their blessing to the 44-year-old star of NBC’s “The Voice.”
According to People, the couple kept the engagement a secret for a short time before blasting social media with the happy news, along with a photo of the couple in which Stefani is showing off the ring, on Oct. 27.

Fans of the pair have been waiting for a walk down the aisle for a long time. Shelton and Stefani met on the set of “The Voice.” Both had recently gone through a divorce, and they struck up a friendship that turned into something more within a few months. By 2015, the couple started dating and the rest, as they say, is history.
The pair have also teamed up professionally for a few songs, including their most recent song, “Happy Together,” which they released as a duet on July 24. “The Voice” tweeted a clip of the couple talking about singing this song together:
