FHP survey shows that many ignore school bus laws - when you have to stop and tips for students

With many Florida students just having returned to school this week, school bus safety is top of mind. A new FHP survey shows that many Florida drivers ignore school bus laws and don't necessarily stop when they should.

You are required to stop if you are coming in the inbound lane, unless there is an unpaved space of at least five feet, a raised median or a physical barrier between your lanes and the bus. Here's the specific language: http://www.floridaschoolbussafety.gov/Law.htm

Students can also take some steps to help keep them safer.

1. Wait for the school bus to come to a complete stop before getting off.

2. Wait for the driver to say it's safe before crossing the street to board or leave the bus.

3. Never walk behind the school bus.
