Bills to ban abortion based on race and sex selection clear Florida House panels

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida House subcommittees have approved bills seeking to ban sex and race-selective abortions and to require that newborns surviving botched abortions receive medical care.

The abortion issue surfaced Wednesday in the House Criminal Justice and Civil Justice subcommittees.

One bill (HB845) would ban abortions motivated by the gender or race of an unborn child. Rep. Charles Van Zant, R-Keystone Heights, says people are coming to the U.S. to get sex or race-selective abortions, but he didn't have figures on how many are done. His bill would require abortion providers to sign an affidavit stating the abortion wasn't done due to an unborn child's race or sex.

The bill cleared the Criminal Justice Subcommittee, but drew criticism. Rep. Irv Slosberg, D-Boca Raton, called it another round of "conservative story time."
