A Tampa Bay Area Road Ranger suffered serious injuries early Saturday in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 275 in Tampa.

The incident was triggered by a drunk driver per a release issued by the Florida Highway Patrol. Eldy Cartaya Dominguez is facing a variety of charges including driving under the influence with serious bodily injury.

He was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail where he is being held without bond.

Investigators say Road Ranger Brian Nelson Barrett was traveling north near Busch Blvd. when the suspect attempted to pass his 2014 Chevrolet pick-up truck. Dominguez’s 2017 Toyota Camry struck the rear of Barrett’s truck.

Post impact, both vehicles burst into flames. The incident closed portion of the Interstate for several hours. The roadway opened just after 6 am.

Barrett, a 42-year-old Wimauma resident, was transported to Tampa General Hospital where he is listed in serious condition. Dominguez suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Once he was medically cleared, he was arrested and transported to jail.
