New crosswalks at USF

Posted

As part of an effort to make our roads safer for pedestrians, Hillsborough County has installed new crosswalks along 50th Street between Fletcher and Fowler Avenues.

The newly-designed crosswalks are called Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons.

The beacons were installed there because the area is a high traffic area for both vehicles and pedestrians. One of the things that really pushed this forward was an accident involving a USF student. In 2014, Courtney Neusch was seriously injured while crossing 50th Street as she was heading to USF.

The new beacons cost $70,000.

How effective they are, according to officials, depends on if they are used properly.

In an effort to make sure they are, county representatives will be out there Wednesday morning to show people how they work.
