Dontae Morris sentenced to life
TAMPA - Dontae Morris has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Rodney Jones.
Morris shot Rodney outside of a Tampa club in May 2010. (
The sentencing, which began just after 8:30 Friday morning, took less than half an hour.
The victim's family members, including his sister, gave an impact statement in the Tampa court room.
Jones' sister asked that Morris be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
On March 13, jurors from Orlando handed down a guilty verdict for the murder. (
This is the first of five murder trials for Morris.
Morris faces the death penalty for the murders of Tampa police officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis during a traffic stop. He turned himself in after one of the biggest manhunts in Tampa history.
Investigators say Morris killed another man the same month he shot Jones, and one more in April before shooting officers Curtis and Kocab.
