Swimming pool safety initiative hits St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Now that the weather is getting warmer in the bay area, Pinellas County authorities are reminding homeowners that swimming pools pose a drowning hazard for little ones.

Teams went door to door in St. Petersburg with literature about pool safety.  Those teams urged homeowners to use pool alarms and fences to keep young kids safe.

Teams focused on the Venetian Isles Neighborhood, because it has more than 300 pools and three have drowned there in the past five years.

Since 2005, the city of St. Petersburg has had a total of ten drowned, all in backyard swimming pools.  And nine of those deaths involved kids under the age of three.
