Sarasota police shoot armed man

SARASOTA, Fla. - Two officers with the Sarasota Police department are on administrative leave after they shot and killed a man Sunday night.

The officers, whose names have not yet been released,  were on bicycle patrol just after 10:00 p.m. in the neighborhood around North Water Tower Park (near 1000 block of 42nd Street in Sarasota) when they encountered a man who pulled out a gun and pointed it at both officers.

Both officers ordered him to drop the weapon several times.  He refused, and in order to defend themselves, the officers fired their duty weapons.

Rescue workers attempted to revive the man, but were unsuccessful.

The two will remain on leave until an investigation, led by the Sarasota Police Department Bureau of Criminal Investigations, is complete.
