Sarasota County deputies say a man stole from his mom to support his $600 a day pain pill addiction

SARASOTA, Fla. - Sarasota County Sheriff's deputies say a man stole from his 72-year-old mother to support his drug addiction.

Michael Dion, 50, of 2728 Forest Knoll Drive, Sarasota, is charged with exploitation of an elderly person and is currently being held on $7,500 bond.

According to deputies, Dion drained his mother's bank accounts to fund his $600 a day addiction to pain pills.

Earlier this month, an arrest report states that Dion took his mother to the bank and asked to withdraw more than $12,000 from her IRA.

His mother appeared confused but told bank staff to do whatever her son said, the report states.  Then, admitted she did not understand what was going on, deputies say.

The Department of Children and Families worked with detectives who say they determined Dion had also made withdrawals from his mother's CD and deposited the money in her account.

Deputies report that Dion has been withdrawing $600 each day since August 15 for a total of $22,800, nearly draining his mother's accounts.

Dion admitted he buys and uses more than a dozen Oxycontin and Xanax pills a day and acknowledged that his mother has dementia and doesn't know about his addiction, an arrest report states.
