Deputies: Mother lies to help son flee arrest

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. - Manatee deputies arrested a wanted man after his mother initially told them incorrect information to help protect her son, officials say.

Deputies responded to what started as a suspicious vehicle in front of a residence in the 7200 block of Westmoreland Drive, Sunday.

When crews arrived, they saw 35-year-old Eric Baun in the passenger seat of the car.

He told deputies that he was at the house to pick up his mother.

His mother soon came outside and confirmed the story that Baun's told the deputies, along with her name.

Baun fled from the scene while his mother gave her information to deputies.

Deputies later discovered that the mother had given a false name due to several warrants being out for her son's arrest.  He was also on drugs.

Baun had warrants for theft and defrauding pawn brokers.

A search began, but deputies were unable to find the suspect.

Around 3:00 p.m., a neighbor called deputies stating that they had seen Baun back at his mother's house.

Deputies responded and surrounded the house.

One deputy, while in the backyard, saw Baun attempting to hide in a Turtle House.

The suspect attempted to run when deputies made contact. Deputies were able to detain Baun and take him into custody.

Several ornate, small spoons and an ashtray where found in Baun's possession.

Deputies were able to find the owner of the items who was out of town at the time.

Baun was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital for observation after complaining of chest pains and sore ribs.
