Man arrested after hours-long standoff in Sarasota

SARASOTA, Fla. - Sarasota Police are investigating a man they arrested after a five hour SWAT standoff early Monday morning after he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman.

He was taken into custody around 8:30 a.m. just outside of the industrial loft he was holed up in near US-301 and 17th St.

Police say they got a call about an armed sexual assault a little before 4 a.m.

"When we arrived and realized that the victim was safe, it was our understanding that the suspect was inside, armed with a weapon," says Genevieve Judge with the Sarasota Police Department.

Police say they responded with K-9's and a SWAT team because they knew he was armed.

Nearby businesses had to remain closed since at least a one block radius of the industrial building in question was shut down.

"We also had negotiators here, talking to him on the phone and through a bullhorn device, so through that we were able to take him into custody," says Judge.

Police have still not released his connection to the victim, if any, or an identity for the suspect, pending the ongoing investigation.
