Coast Guard rescues Bradenton boaters in Gulf of Mexico; boat remains adrift

CEDAR KEY, Fla. - Two boaters from Bradenton were rescued in Gulf of Mexico waters off Cedar Key after reporting engine trouble and requesting Coast Guard assistance on Saturday.

Paul Conners, 47, and Steve Kapecz, 42, were aboard the vessel "No Bananas" when they contacted Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg and reported trouble with the boat Saturday afternoon.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Clearwater arrived on scene early Sunday morning, hoisted the men aboard and transported them to Clearwater.

"Due to rough seas, a good Samaritan was unable to tow No Bananas," the USCG said in a statement. The vessel is currently adrift in the Gulf. All mariners are advised to report any sightings of the boat.

"It is imperative boaters check the weather before taking to the seas," USCG Petty Officer 2nd Class Adam Morell said. "Weather can be very unpredictable. Checking weather conditions can help boaters stay safe on the water."

No injuries were reported.
