Lakeland man charged in hit and run, victim who was pushing wheelchair died at scene

LAKELAND, Fla. - A 40-year-old Lakeland man was arrested after he crashed into another man pushing a wheel chair and fled from the scene Wednesday, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. The victim died at the scene.

Just after 9:40 p.m., a man wearing a reflective vest and pushing a wheel chair was crossing the south bound lanes of South Florida Avenue from east to west, near the entrance to the Outback restaurant, located on S. Florida Avenue in Lakeland. He wasn't using a crosswalk.

At the same time, John McCoy, was driving southbound.

Witnesses say the car appeared to be speeding when the driver struck the victim. The impact sent the victim and the wheelchair several hundred feet west, killing the victim Wednesday night.

McCoy fled from the scene.

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested McCoy at a Lakeland home. He was charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving a Fatality.

His vehicle, a red 2013 Acura, was locked in McCoy's garage with damage concurrent to the accident.
