LAKELAND, Fla. — The Lakeland Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their officers after he was found unresponsive in his patrol car on Wednesday.

According to the department, 57-year-old Ken Foley was found after dispatch was unable to contact him through his radio. Authorities believe Officer Foley suffered a medical episode while on break in his car.

Officer Foley was a 29-year veteran of the department.

On Tuesday, friends and families gathered at the First Baptist Church in Lakeland to pay respect for Foley.

Cpt. Marvin Tarver remembered the late police officer as a genuine person.

"If you talked to Ken, you get to know Ken. You get to know his family simply because he always brings his family up," Cpt. Tarver said.

Tony Elmore, an associate pastor with the Central Baptist Church in Winter Haven, called Foley "an asset to our community."
