WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- A deputy-involved shooting is under investigation in Polk County, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting occurred Tuesday night in Winter Haven. Chance Christopher Haegele, 20, was armed with a shotgun was killed in the shooting.

No deputies were injured and no other suspects are being sought at this time.

Deputies received a call from a young man at Florida State University and another woman showed up to Winter Haven Police Department to report she received information that Chance was going to kill himself. The Polk County Sheriff's Office talked to Chance's mother who told them he was going to kill her and himself. Dispatchers talked to Chance's mom who said Chance was alive but not well. She was concerned because she said her son had a shotgun. Deputies were dispatched and arrived at approximately 11:15 p.m.

When deputies arrived on scene they heard a disturbance at the end of the street. Several calls to 911 were made back to back and Chance was telling dispatchers he "wanted the cops to kill him and that he has a shotgun." Deputies found Chance fighting over a shotgun with his mother. Chance kicked and hit his mother, grabbed the gun and ran from deputies at the scene.

Deputies found Chance and told him to put the gun down. He pointed the gun at the deputies and deputies responded with gunfire. Deputies shot at Chance approximately 17 times and he was struck several times. Deputies were able to get the shotgun away from Chance and began CPR. Chance died from the gunshot wounds at the scene.

Sheriff Grady Judd says "at the end of the day, this is a tragic ending to a sad set of circumstances."

The suspect was baker acted by Florida University Police on two occasions and the Tallahassee Police on one occasion. He has been baker acted seven times since September 2017.
