DADE CITY, Fla. — As Pasco deputy Robert Lewis showed up to a Dade City home, two not so friendly dogs greeted him, and their barking quickly turned into biting.
Deputies responded to the home after a report one of the dogs bit a delivery person from FedEx.
The deputy was trying to take pictures when the dogs came after him.
“They got me good,” Lewis said.
In body camera video you can see Lewis was bitten just above the knee.
“He bit you twice,” his partner said.
Lewis went to the hospital to get stitched up. Even though the deputy was attacked, he didn’t use his gun.
We’ve seen other cases that turned out much differently, including a 2015 incident, also in Dade City.
A deputy was checking out a silent alarm, sand hot a Rottweiler named Cowboy who was running at him.
While deputies are armed, those delivering packages aren’t. Experts say they need to look out for dog warning signs.
- Never assume a dog won’t bite.
- And if confronted, don’t run, but try and put an object between you and the dog.
Animal control says the dogs owner gave up custody of them. They say the dogs are a "mixed breed."
Now they are being held under quarantine. So far no charges have been filed.
