New Port Richey police officer, John Nohejl, arrested

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - A 13-year veteran with the New Port Richey Police Department is facing multiple narcotics charges following his arrest Thursday afternoon in nearby Hernando County.

Officer John Nohejl's most recent assignment was that of a Master Patrol Officer assigned to the evening shift.

He was arrested by Hernando County deputies in conjunction with the Florida department of Law Enforcement, according to a police statement.

He was not on duty when he was arrested.

No other details about the arrest or charges were immediately available.

Nohejl was placed on administrative leave in April, 2012.  Following an internal investigation, allegations against him were upheld including:

- Sleeping on Duty

- Unacceptable Neglect in Performing Assigned Duties

- Engaging in any Conduct on or off-duty which adversely affects the morale and efficiency of the Department or which has a tendency to destroy public respect or confidence in the Department or himself.

Nohejl was suspended without pay for twenty consecutive works days.

On November 18, a second investigation was ordered on Nohejl. According to the statement, that investigation is ongoing and no information was released.

New Port Richey Police Chief James Steffens is expected to provide more details at an upcoming news conference.
