Largo post office reopens after HazMat team determines substance on letter is safe

LARGO, Fla. - A Largo post office was evacuated due to a suspicious substance a person found on their mail Saturday.

A Largo Fire Department HazMat crew responded and evacuated the US Post Office at 50 8th Ave. SW after the person found the powdery substance on a letter in their post office box.

Officials said initial tests determined the substances was not dangerous, but further tests would be conducted to determine the type of substance.

There were no reports of anyone being sickened by the substance. The post office was reopened around 5 p.m..

Largo Police shut down 8th Avenue during the investigation, but the roadway has since reopened.
